Ward summary
Data is published for neighbourhoods (LSOAs and Data Zones) of about 1,500-3,000 residents, and wards are sometimes smaller than that. Each neighbourhood is therefore shared between the wards it covers, in proportion to how many of its residents live in each, using 2021 census populations located by postcode. Counts are consequently shares of a neighbourhood rather than whole numbers, averages carry the same weighting, and medians are approximations. That pattern of residents is fixed at 2021 and applied to every year, so a small ward, or one holding only a corner of a neighbourhood, is less certain than a whole local authority. Scottish wards use a simpler match, with each Data Zone counted whole in the ward containing its population centre, because the Output Area census counts behind the split cover England and Wales only.
